Apapacho Resident: December 2024
Apapacho’s December resident spent their time reflecting and creating in preparation for an upcoming February exhibition. It was their first visit to CDMX and after many years of wanting to visit this “magical and complex city,” they were finally able to make it a reality.
“As a child of a Mexican-American family, so far removed due to generations of immigration and redistribution of borders, there is expansive, embodied release and healing that comes from visiting that land.”
Marisa Skelpsa-Muñoz (she/they) is a queer, mixed-race Chicana, joyful weirdo, mermaid queen, painter, and introverted Scorpio. Marisa was born and raised in Phoenix, AZ, USA and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with a concentration in translation and interpretation from the University of Arizona. She has a decade-long career in nonprofit, primarily working in the fields of reproductive justice, fertility, sexual health, LGBTQ+ youth education, and DEI. Marisa paints as she loves: fiercely and tenderly. A pleasure activist born and raised in the Sonoran Desert, she is moved by the intrinsic connection between the joys and pains of our bodies and the land. She expresses that movement using evocative imagery and a color palette that cackles in the face of shame and repression.
La residente de diciembre de Apapacho dedicó tiempo a reflexionar y crear en este espacio en preparación para su próxima exposición en febrero. Era su primera visita a la CDMX y después de muchos años de querer visitar la “ciudad mágica y compleja”, finalmente pudding hacerlo realidad.
“Como hija de una familia mexicano-estadounidense, tan alejada debido a generaciones de inmigración y redistribución de las fronteras, hay una liberación y sanación expansiva y encarnada que proviene de visitar esta tierra”.
Marisa Skelpsa-Muñoz (ella/elle) es una chicana queer y mestiza, un bicho raro alegre, una reina sirena, una pintora y una Escorpio introvertida. Marisa nació y creció en Phoenix, AZ, EE. UU. y tiene una licenciatura en español con especialización en traducción e interpretación de la Universidad de Arizona. Tiene una carrera de una década trabajando en organizaciones sin fines de lucro, principalmente en los campos de justicia reproductiva, fertilidad, salud sexual, educación juvenil LGBTQ+ y DEI. Marisa pinta como ama: con fiereza y ternura. Activista del placer nacida y criada en el desierto de Sonora, la conmueve la conexión intrínseca entre las alegrías y los dolores de nuestros cuerpos y la tierra. Ella expresa ese movimiento utilizando imágenes evocadoras y una paleta de colores que se ríe ante la vergüenza y la represión.
