Traditionally, performance art is experienced live, and the camera often archives the ephemeral act. In contrast, (Im)Posibilidades features artists who create performance art specifically for the lens of a camera and shape the captured video into works beyond the bounds of documentation. These contemporary artists leverage the accessibility of digital video-making technologies and are influenced by a wide range of time-based media, from cinema to TikTok dance challenges. This exhibition is a limited survey of the last decade of this artform produced by artists living and working in Mexico and the USA.
The artists featured in this exhibition are from a singular land mass with inextricably linked history and social context. These works challenge Indigenous erasure brought on by colonialism, disrupt the naive and pervasive tales regarding the history of slavery and its contemporary impact on Black communities, dethrone stereotypical gender roles, and subvert the harm carried out upon the landscape by rapid gentrification and the overarching role of capitalism. These artists are creating liminal spaces for new forms of expression by manipulating and rearranging video via editing, sound design, and chroma keying. The end results point to unambiguous histories and construct new digital platforms for these artists’ performances, for their own stories, to thrive.
