Jorge Rojas: Coyotek

September 13, 2024–January 26, 2025

Coyotek is a solo exhibition by Mexican American artist Jorge Rojas composed of a site-specific corn mandala, interactive installations, photography, and a selection of performance videos created over the past two decades. The exhibition surveys Rojas’ inventive, thought-provoking, and frequently political work emerging from a diverse artistic practice.

The title, Coyotek, is a playful neologism blending the words coyote and technology to reflect an identity and aesthetic woven from Rojas’ interest in borders and immigration policy through his own multicultural immigrant experience. While colloquially, a coyote is a guide for immigrants across the Mexico–US border, Rojas’ work is motivated by his interest in bridging ideas and concepts across cultures. His creative process is inspired by spiritual histories, abuses of power, interpretations of ancient rites, Indigenous knowledge, and human interconnectedness.

As part of the exhibition programming, Rojas will present a live performance, give an artist talk, and lead a community workshop during the museum’s Dia de los Muertos event. The totality of Coyotek fosters transcultural dialogue and community engagement.
