Wendell Smith

One of Apapacho’s June residents was Wendell Smith, an artist currently living and working in Atlanta GA. During his time in CDMX he focused on a body of work that continues his ongoing dialogue in Caribbean art as a practice and questioning its place in the global hierarchy of artistic expression. Through his work, hopes to foster public discussion around the definition of what constitutes Caribbean art, an imperative in combating the western tradition of placing its practice within the “exotic,” reducing it to the banal. Working in drawings, painting, and sculpture, the work brings together ideas that present the personal, historical, and cultural ideas of Caribbean society such as space, the body, and displacement.
“My time at Apapacho will have a great impact on the work that I continue to build on. I had the opportunity to discover, through interactions with the community and cultural resources, a rich narrative about my own cultural history. The exploratory moments at the residency were accompanied by access to archeological and cultural spaces. This experience challenged me to move outside of my own comfort zone in my visual expression and embrace a multifaceted approach to acquiring new ways of seeing.”
Wendell Smith holds an undergraduate degree in Literature and Creative Arts from the University of the West Indies (First Class Honors) and later pursued studies in studio arts at the Savannah College of Art and Design graduating with an MFA in Painting. In addition, he holds a Doctorate in Education from Walden University. Smith awards and fellowships include: the Fulbright Fellowship, the Artist Fellowship Grant, Puffin Foundation Emerging Artist Grant, the Archie D. Bertha H. Walker Fellowship Award, and the Trinidad and Tobago Support Alliance Grant. He has completed artist residency fellowships in North America and internationally including: Hambidge Center for the Creative Arts and Sciences, Vermont Studio Center, Virginia Center for Creative Arts, Arte Sumapaz in Colombia and FaveLab in Athens Greece. His work has been exhibited most notably at: Museum of the Americas, Arlington VA, King Tisdell Cottage Black History Museum, Savannah, GA, the University of Alabama, Huntsville Al, Duke University, Durham NC, Pinnacle Gallery SCAD, Savannah, GA. Jepson Center for the Arts, Savannah GA, and the African American Cultural Center, Charlotte, NC, THINKARTWORK Studio, Trinidad and Tobago. Publications include: Callaloo: A Journal of African Diaspora Arts and Letters, Journal of Africana Studies and Seadly, New Art International. His scholarly activities focused on research into the design of curriculum for Caribbean higher education in the arts to meet the needs of the global art market. It has been published by Caribbean Educational Research Journal.
Uno de los residentes de Apapacho durante el mes de junio fue Wendell Smith, un artista que actualmente reside y trabaja en Atlanta, Georgia. Durante su estancia en la Ciudad de México, se centró en un conjunto de obras que da continuidad a su diálogo permanente en torno al arte caribeño como práctica, cuestionando su lugar dentro de la jerarquía global de la expresión artística. A través de su obra, aspira a fomentar la discusión pública en torno a la definición de lo que constituye el arte caribeño; un imperativo para contrarrestar la tradición occidental de encasillar dicha práctica dentro de lo «exótico», reduciéndola a lo banal. Mediante el dibujo, la pintura y la escultura, su trabajo amalgama ideas que abordan aspectos personales, históricos y culturales de la sociedad caribeña, tales como el espacio, el cuerpo y el desplazamiento.
“Mi estancia en Apapacho tuvo un gran impacto en la obra que continúo desarrollando. Tuve la oportunidad de descubrir —a través de las interacciones con la comunidad y los recursos culturales— una rica narrativa sobre mi propia historia cultural. Los momentos de exploración durante la residencia estuvieron acompañados por el acceso a espacios arqueológicos y culturales. Esta experiencia me desafió a salir de mi zona de confort en mi expresión visual y a adoptar un enfoque multifacético para adquirir nuevas formas de ver”.
Wendell Smith posee una licenciatura en Literatura y Artes Creativas por la Universidad de las Indias Occidentales (con honores de primera clase) y, posteriormente, cursó estudios de artes plásticas en el Savannah College of Art and Design, graduándose con una Maestría en Bellas Artes (MFA) en Pintura. Además, cuenta con un Doctorado en Educación por la Walden University. Entre los premios y becas recibidos por Smith se incluyen: la Beca Fulbright, la Beca para Artistas (Artist Fellowship Grant), la Beca para Artistas Emergentes de la Fundación Puffin, el Premio de la Fundación Archie D. y Bertha H. Walker, y la Beca de la Trinidad and Tobago Support Alliance. Ha realizado residencias artísticas tanto en Norteamérica como a nivel internacional, destacando su participación en el Hambidge Center for the Creative Arts and Sciences, el Vermont Studio Center, el Virginia Center for Creative Arts, Arte Sumapaz en Colombia y FaveLab en Atenas, Grecia. Su obra ha sido expuesta en lugares de gran relevancia, tales como: el Museum of the Americas (Arlington, VA), el King Tisdell Cottage Black History Museum (Savannah, GA), la Universidad de Alabama (Huntsville, AL), la Duke University (Durham, NC), la Pinnacle Gallery del SCAD (Savannah, GA), el Jepson Center for the Arts (Savannah, GA), el African American Cultural Center (Charlotte, NC) y el THINKARTWORK Studio (Trinidad y Tobago).
