One of our June residents in Apapacho was Suzanne Stroebe, based in Oakland, CA, USA. Stroebe said that her residency goal was to balance making and connecting with the artworld and culture, art, and rich history of CDMX.
After her time in Apapacho, Suzanne told us, “Spending time in CDMX, taking in the architecture, color, and layers of history was very impactful. I enjoyed spending hours walking, observing, and visiting galleries, then returning to work in my sketchbook. I can see the impact in terms of color, form, and layering in my work as I look through my sketchbook from my time at Apapacho! I also really appreciated the opportunity to create something site-specific in the patio, and to enjoy the work from the previous artists in this lovely space.”
Stroebe was born in San Francisco, California. After over a decade of living and working in New York City, she returned to the Bay Area in 2019. She creates mixed-media assemblages to investigate the protective and ritual use of adornment, designed specifically for and in reference to the feminine body. Suzanne received an MFA in Fine Arts from Parsons the New School for Design, a BA in Drawing and Painting from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a California Single-Subject teaching credential in Art from Touro University. She has worked as an arts educator for over a decade. Her work has been exhibited in galleries, museums, and alternative spaces in New York, Miami, Florida, Richmond, Virginia, Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, Toronto, Canada, Europe, and Istanbul, Turkey. She has attended artist residencies in New York, the San Francisco Bay Area, Pennsylvania, Martha’s Vineyard, and Mexico. She is a recipient of the Ellen Hoffman Memorial Fund, a Puffin Foundation Artist Grant, and was named a Distinguished Alumni by the UC Santa Cruz Fine Arts Department.
Una de nuestras residentes del mes de junio en Apapacho fue Suzanne Stroebe, radicada en Oakland, California (EE. UU.). Stroebe comentó que el objetivo de su residencia era equilibrar la creación artística con la conexión con el mundo del arte, así como con la cultura, el arte y la rica historia de la CDMX.
Tras su estancia en Apapacho, Suzanne nos comentó: “Pasar tiempo en la CDMX, empapándome de su arquitectura, su colorido y sus capas de historia, resultó sumamente impactante. Disfruté dedicando horas a caminar, observar y visitar galerías, para luego regresar a trabajar en mi cuaderno de bocetos. ¡Al hojear el cuaderno de mi estancia en Apapacho, puedo percibir claramente el impacto que aquello tuvo en mi obra en términos de color, forma y superposición de capas! Asimismo, valoré enormemente la oportunidad de crear una obra site-specific en el patio, así como de disfrutar de las piezas realizadas por los artistas anteriores en este espacio tan encantador”.
Stroebe nació en San Francisco, California. Tras vivir y trabajar durante más de una década en la ciudad de Nueva York, regresó al Área de la Bahía en 2019. Crea ensamblajes de técnica mixta para investigar el uso protector y ritual del adorno, diseñado específicamente para el cuerpo femenino y en referencia a este.
