Randall Garrett

Randall Garrett was one of Apapacho’s residents in July. Randall is no stranger to CDMX, having lived on and off in the city for nearly a decade. Working towards a goal of becoming a filmmaker, he used his time in residency to research locations, story lines, and characters for a potential future film to be set here and built on his years living in Mexico City. He explored some of the barrios where he lived and worked, shot test scenes, scouted for character ideas, filmed footage for my vlog channel on YouTube, and gathered inspiration to begin development of a treatment for a potential film to be set there in the heart of the Valle de México.
Randall Garrett was born and raised in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. He moved to Texas as an adolescent and earned his BFA at West Texas A&M, followed by his MFA at The University of North Texas, studying with Vernon Fisher. Garrett joined the seminal artist-run space, 500X Gallery, in 1992, and established his own DIY space, Plush Gallery in 2000. In 1998, he joined Dallas College and worked there as Gallery Director and Faculty in art and humanities courses for 20 years. In 2017, he moved to Mexico City, living there for 5 years, then moved to the south of Mexico in Oaxaca City for 2 years. In 2023, Garrett returned to Dallas, Texas, where he is now the Gallery and Art Collection Manager for Dallas College. The artist has had 25 solo shows and performance events, most recently at Combo Co in Oaxaca City (“Tianguistopia” 2023) and Pancil on Paper Gallery in Dallas (“All My Relations” 2024). He makes collage and assemblage based art, spoken word performance, and is a vlogger on YouTube.
Randall Garrett fue uno de los residentes de Apapacho durante el mes de julio. Randall no es un extraño en la CDMX, pues ha vivido en la ciudad —de forma intermitente— durante casi una década. Con el objetivo de convertirse en cineasta, aprovechó su estancia en la residencia para investigar locaciones, tramas y personajes para una posible futura película que estaría ambientada aquí y que se nutriría de sus años de vida en la Ciudad de México. Exploró algunos de los barrios donde vivió y trabajó, rodó escenas de prueba, buscó ideas para personajes, grabó material para su canal de vlog en YouTube y recopiló inspiración para comenzar a desarrollar un tratamiento para una posible película que se situaría allí, en el corazón del Valle de México.
Randall Garrett nació y creció en las montañas Ozark de Arkansas. Se mudó a Texas durante su adolescencia y obtuvo su Licenciatura en Bellas Artes (BFA) en la West Texas A&M, seguida de su Maestría en Bellas Artes (MFA) en la Universidad del Norte de Texas, donde estudió con Vernon Fisher. Garrett se unió en 1992 a la seminal galería 500X Gallery —un espacio gestionado por artistas— y, en el año 2000, fundó su propio espacio autogestionado (DIY), Plush Gallery. En 1998, se incorporó al Dallas College, donde trabajó durante 20 años como director de galería y docente en cursos de arte y humanidades. En 2017, se trasladó a la Ciudad de México, donde residió durante cinco años; posteriormente, se mudó al sur de México, a la ciudad de Oaxaca, donde vivió por dos años. En 2023, Garrett regresó a Dallas, Texas, ciudad en la que actualmente se desempeña como gerente de la galería y de la colección de arte del Dallas College. El artista ha realizado 25 exposiciones individuales y eventos de performance; los más recientes tuvieron lugar en Combo Co, en la ciudad de Oaxaca (Tianguistopia, 2023), y en la galería Pencil on Paper de Dallas (All My Relations, 2024). Su obra artística se centra en el collage y el assemblage, realiza performances de palabra hablada (spoken word) y es vlogger en YouTube.
