Our Apapacho resident in May Berlin based visual artist and performer Pawel Reczek. Raised in a small village in southeast Poland, Pawel grew up surrounded by nature and a close knit community. Their artistic practice began with theatre studies at Acting School of Halina and Jan Machulscy in Warsaw. Later, they pursued a painting and visual arts course at Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan, and drawing at Paris Collage of Art. Their practice primarily is based on drawing and performance, delving into themes of identity, presence, character, and action, all beginning from my own body as a focal point. They have been part of exhibitions in Warsaw, Paris, Berlin, London, also attended residencies in Victoria, Reims, and currently being a resident at Scope Berlin.
Pawel shares that the best part of their residency time was “being able to see the art market in Mexico City, founding smaller places, reconnecting with artists I met in the past.”
[Apapacho is] A nice space, great location. Thanks for trying to help to find places to go,” and advices, “See the city, do your own thing. If you are not sure or scared of the city, don’t be. It’s a fantastic place.”
During their residency, Pawel focused on performative drawing, treating paper more like a body than a mere surface. They experimented with natural materials, engaging in simple and honest actions that reveal emotional states without theatricality, yet within a playful context. Pawel explored how gestures can convey intimacy and sensitivity, creating, for the first time, longer performative situations instead of short actions. These spaces, where time, repetition, and attention come together, allow subtle experiences to unfold.
Pawel shares their time in our residency “It was time for process-based working, a lot of fighting, with myself, time for this, and the darkness of the apartment, being alone. Reconnecting with my past, specific personal situations, trying to change, staying in between different outcomes, approaches to art, very new, both nurturing and frustrating. A lot of impact came from seeing museums, small art meetings, performances. Maybe I got more rough, more visual, direct or violent. Feeling like a dog, im materials that will decay, mesuring my body to trap it. Probably I tried it to leave it. But paradoxical meetings with other artists made me more gentle.”
El artista visual y performer afincado en Berlín, Pawel Reczek, fue nuestro residente en mayo en Apapacho. Pawel creció en un pequeño pueblo del sureste de Polonia, rodeado de naturaleza y de una comunidad muy unida. Su trayectoria artística comenzó con estudios de teatro en la Escuela de Actuación Halina y Jan Machulscy de Varsovia. Más tarde, cursó estudios de pintura y artes visuales en la Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti de Milán y de dibujo en el Paris College of Art. Su trabajo se centra principalmente en el dibujo y la performance, explorando temas como la identidad, la presencia, el personaje y la acción, tomando siempre su propio cuerpo como punto de partida. Ha participado en exposiciones en Varsovia, París, Berlín y Londres, y ha realizado residencias artísticas en Victoria y Reims; actualmente, se encuentra en residencia en Scope Berlín.
Pawel comenta que lo mejor de su residencia fue “poder conocer el mercado del arte en Ciudad de México, descubrir espacios más pequeños y reencontrarme con artistas que había conocido anteriormente.
“[Apapacho es] un espacio agradable y con una ubicación excelente. Gracias por intentar ayudar a encontrar sitios a los que ir.” El artista aconseja: “Conoce la ciudad, haz lo que te apetezca. Si no estás seguro o te da miedo la ciudad, no te preocupes; es un lugar fantástico”.
Durante su residencia, Pawel se centró en el dibujo performativo, tratando el papel más como un cuerpo que como una mera superficie. Experimentó con materiales naturales, realizando acciones sencillas y honestas que revelan estados emocionales sin teatralidad, aunque dentro de un contexto lúdico. Pawel exploró cómo los gestos pueden transmitir intimidad y sensibilidad, creando, por primera vez, situaciones performativas más extensas en lugar de acciones breves. Estos espacios, donde convergen el tiempo, la repetición y la atención, permiten que se desplieguen experiencias sutiles.
Pawel comparte su experiencia en nuestra residencia, “Fue un momento para el trabajo basado en el proceso, de mucha lucha —conmigo mismo y con el tiempo— y de habitar la oscuridad del apartamento y la soledad. Fue una etapa para reconectar con mi pasado y con situaciones personales concretas, para intentar cambiar y moverme entre distintos desenlaces y enfoques artísticos; algo muy novedoso, a la vez enriquecedor y frustrante. Las visitas a museos, los pequeños encuentros artísticos y las performances tuvieron un gran impacto en mí. Quizás me volví más crudo, más visual, directo o violento. Me sentía como un perro, rodeado de materiales destinados a descomponerse, midiendo mi cuerpo para atraparlo. Probablemente intentaba hacerlo para luego dejarlo atrás. Sin embargo, los paradójicos encuentros con otros artistas me hicieron más amable”.
