Nancy Rivera

In June, Apapacho also hosted Nancy Rivera, a Mexican American visual artist and arts administrator based in Salt Lake City, Utah. During her time in Mexico City, she will conducted research for a new visual arts project exploring the cultural, historical, and social significance of site-specific monuments. Her work involved visiting and documenting a selection of monuments while gaining in-depth knowledge of their roles in symbolizing shared heritage and shaping communal identity. This project also explores a deeply personal dimension for Nancy: contrasting the symbols and stories embedded in the monuments of my birthplace with those in the city she immigrated to and have called home for the past twenty-five years. After her time in CDMX, Rivera shared:
“I cherish every opportunity to visit Mexico City—to speak the language so freely, to taste the food that brings back memories of my childhood, and to experience this magical city as an artist. During the residency, I visited a few places that hold deep meaning for me and my family, and returning to them as an adult was a powerful experience—one that will shape and inform my future projects.”
Through the mediums of photography and mixed media, Rivera explores the interplay between migration and hybridity as part of an evolving practice that investigates notions of identity, belonging, and citizenship. She has exhibited nationally in a variety of traditional and nontraditional venues including Spring/Break Art Show in Los Angeles, California, Ruffin Gallery at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, Utah Museum of Contemporary Art in Salt Lake City, Utah and Granary Arts in Ephraim, Utah. Rivera is an alumna of the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures (NALAC) Leadership Institute and is the recipient of the 2024 CENTER Jay and Susie Tyrrell Excellence in Works by Hand Award.a.
En junio, Apapacho también recibió a Nancy Rivera, una artista visual y gestora cultural mexicano-estadounidense radicada en Salt Lake City, Utah. Durante su estancia en la Ciudad de México, llevó a cabo una investigación para un nuevo proyecto de artes visuales que explora el significado cultural, histórico y social de los monumentos site-specific. Su trabajo consistió en visitar y documentar una selección de monumentos, al tiempo que adquiría un conocimiento profundo sobre el papel que estos desempeñan al simbolizar el patrimonio compartido y moldear la identidad colectiva. Este proyecto explora también una dimensión profundamente personal para Nancy: contrastar los símbolos y las historias inscritos en los monumentos de su lugar de nacimiento con aquellos presentes en la ciudad a la que emigró y que ha considerado su hogar durante los últimos veinticinco años. Tras concluir su estancia en la CDMX, Rivera compartió lo siguiente:
“Atesoro cada oportunidad de visitar la Ciudad de México: de hablar el idioma con tanta libertad, de saborear la comida que evoca recuerdos de mi infancia y de vivir esta ciudad mágica como artista. Durante la residencia, visité algunos lugares que tienen un profundo significado para mí y para mi familia; regresar a ellos siendo adulta fue una experiencia poderosa, una que moldeará e influirá en mis futuros proyectos”.
A través de los medios de la fotografía y las técnicas mixtas, Rivera explora la interacción entre la migración y la hibridez como parte de una práctica en constante evolución que investiga las nociones de identidad, pertenencia y ciudadanía. Ha expuesto a nivel nacional en una variedad de espacios, tanto tradicionales como no tradicionales, incluyendo el Spring/Break Art Show en Los Ángeles (California), la Ruffin Gallery de la Universidad de Virginia en Charlottesville (Virginia), el Utah Museum of Contemporary Art en Salt Lake City (Utah) y Granary Arts en Ephraim (Utah). Rivera es exalumna del Instituto de Liderazgo de la National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures (NALAC) y ha sido galardonada con el Premio CENTER Jay and Susie Tyrrell a la Excelencia en Obras Manuales de 2024.
