Half of February in Apapacho was filled by an experimental filmmaker from Stockholm, Sweden named Karin Sonnsjö Lönegren, along with her father and sister. Their residency was part of a larger project taking place over six weeks of travel in Mexico where Karin worked on an experimental documentary film project about her father, their relationship, and his relationship to himself.
Karin explains, “my father has always worked a lot. He stayed at the same company for thirty years, until one day he decided to quit. He began to study Spanish at the university, and has done so for a few years now, waiting to eventually go to Mexico and try to speak the language. I have never seen my father dance ever, but suddenly he has also begun taking dancing lessons in salsa.”
Karin and her family spent much of their time recording CDMX’s daily life and researching the cultural and historical context of the artwork and cultural norms of the urban environment. They were able to immerse themselves in the Spanish language and challenge their years of study.
After the residency, Karin shared, “For research and filming the documentary, was absolutely essential. It’s the first proper residency I visit after graduating, and hopefully it will make it easier to go to others in the future. It also helped me get funding from the Swedish arts council for the second time… I also have been extremely inspired on a personal artistic level — gained a lot of new perspectives on visual narratives through studying the murals and votive paintings.”
Karin Sonnsjö Lönegren lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden. She graduated from the Bachelor’s Programme in Fine Art at Konstfack 2023. Karin works with essay films, like translations gone astray. Her material originates from image-worlds and idea-worlds both down in the subjective, like personal dreams, and out in the open, like google street view’s public archive. Writing, filming, and making montage is a way to try to grasp onto experiences and conditions that want to slip away. Karin wants to captivate them within the image frame and the time frame, the material borders of the film.
Funding for Karin’s time in Apapacho was provided by the Swedish Council of Arts.
Karin Sonnsjö Lönegren junto con su padre y su hermana fueron quienes habitaron Apapacho la segunda mitad de febrero. Karin es una cineasta experimental de Estocolmo, Suecia. Su residencia formó parte de un proyecto más amplio que se desarrolló durante seis semanas en México, donde Karin trabajó en un documental experimental sobre su padre, su relación y la relación de este consigo mismo.
Karin explica: “Mi padre siempre ha trabajado mucho. Permaneció en la misma compañía durante treinta años, hasta que un día decidió dejarlo. Empezó a estudiar español en la universidad y lo ha hecho durante algunos años, esperando ir a México y aprender a hablar el idioma. Nunca he visto bailar a mi padre, pero de repente también ha empezado a tomar clases de salsa”.
Karin y su familia dedicaron gran parte de su tiempo a documentar la vida cotidiana de la CDMX e investigar el contexto cultural e histórico de las obras de arte y las normas culturales del entorno urbano. Pudieron sumergirse en el español y desafiar sus años de estudio.
Tras la residencia, Karin comenta: “Para la investigación y la filmación del documental, fue absolutamente esencial. Es la primera residencia propiamente dicha a la que asisto tras graduarme, y espero que me facilite asistir a otras en el futuro. También me ayudó a conseguir financiación del Consejo Sueco de las Artes por segunda vez… Me he sentido enormemente inspirada a nivel artístico personal: he adquirido muchas nuevas perspectivas sobre las narrativas visuales al estudiar los murales y las pinturas votivas”.
Karin Sonnsjö Lönegren vive y trabaja en Estocolmo, Suecia. Se graduó de la Licenciatura en Bellas Artes en Konstfack en 2023. Karin trabaja con películas-ensayo, como traducciones extraviadas. Su material proviene de mundos de imágenes e ideas, tanto en lo subjetivo, como en los sueños personales; tanto en lo abierto, como en el archivo público de Google Street View. Escribir, filmar y realizar montajes es una forma de intentar aferrarse a experiencias y condiciones que quieren desaparecer. Karin busca cautivarlos dentro del cuadro de la imagen y el tiempo, dentro de los límites materiales de la película.
La estancia de Karin en Apapacho fue financiada por el Consejo Sueco de las Artes.
