Jorge Rojas

Invited resident Jorge Rojas was one of two artists to be in residency in Apapacho in July 2024. Rojas spent his time focusing on his work and research, especially as he prepared for several upcoming projects.
Rojas wrote, “This experience has directly contributed to the quality and depth of my work, including a new performance at the Kimball Art Center in Park City, Utah, and a solo exhibition opening at the El Paso Museum of Art in September of this year. Staying at Apapacho was not just lovely and comfortable, but also provided easy access to the museums I visited, including a magical day at Teotihuacán. During my residency, I visited over 10 museums all over Mexico City, witnessed a live Muxe performance at the Teatro de la Ciudad, and enjoyed terrific meals that ranged from eating in the public market to gourmet Mexican food in Colonia Condesa. I also had the opportunity to visit the studio of one of the artists I’m working with on a curatorial project. As an artist from Mexico living in the United States, it is not lost on me that some of my most memorable and meaningful experiences in my own country have been with and through ProArtes Mexico.”
As always, it was an honor to host Jorge Rojas. He contributes positively to all projects he graces. We look forward to following his career and working with him into the future.
Jorge Rojas (b. Cuautla, Morelos, Mexico; lives and works in Salt Lake City, Utah) is a multidisciplinary artist, curator, and educator. Rojas studied Art at the University of Utah and at Bellas Artes in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Rojas uses visual art, performance, and social engagement to examine cultural, social, and mediated forms of communication and art production. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and is included in multiple museum collections. From 2015-2021, Rojas served as director of learning and engagement at Utah Museum of Fine Arts. In 2019, Artists of Utah/15 Bytes named Rojas one of Utah’s Most Influential Artists. In 2022 he was selected as a Visual Arts Fellow for Utah Arts & Museums and received the Salt Lake City Mayor’s Artist Award. Rojas’s combined practice as an artist, curator, and educator align with his passion for working with artists, arts institutions and communities towards social, racial and cultural justice.
El residente invitado Jorge Rojas fue uno de los dos artistas en residencia en Apapacho durante julio de 2024. Rojas dedicó su tiempo a centrarse en su obra y en su investigación, especialmente mientras se preparaba para varios proyectos venideros.
Rojas escribió: “Esta experiencia ha contribuido directamente a la calidad y profundidad de mi trabajo, incluyendo una nueva performance en el Kimball Art Center en Park City, Utah, y una exposición individual que se inaugurará en el Museo de Arte de El Paso en septiembre de este año. Mi estancia en Apapacho no solo fue encantadora y cómoda, sino que también me ofreció un fácil acceso a los museos que visité, incluyendo un día mágico en Teotihuacán. Durante mi residencia, visité más de diez museos por toda la Ciudad de México, presencié una performance en vivo de una muxe en el Teatro de la Ciudad y disfruté de comidas fantásticas que abarcaron desde platos en el mercado público hasta gastronomía mexicana gourmet en la Colonia Condesa. También tuve la oportunidad de visitar el estudio de uno de los artistas con los que estoy colaborando en un proyecto curatorial. Como artista mexicana residente en los Estados Unidos, no paso por alto el hecho de que algunas de mis experiencias más memorables y significativas en mi propio país han sido junto a ProArtes México y gracias a esta organización”.
Como siempre, fue un honor recibir a Jorge Rojas. Él contribuye de manera positiva a todos los proyectos que enriquece con su presencia. Esperamos seguir de cerca su carrera y trabajar con él en el futuro.

En 2022, fue seleccionado como Becario de Artes Visuales por Utah Arts & Museums y recibió el Premio al Artista de la Alcaldía de Salt Lake City. La práctica combinada de Rojas como artista, curador y educador se alinea con su pasión por trabajar con artistas, instituciones artísticas y comunidades en pro de la justicia social, racial y cultural.
