“Ensayo de un Sismo” | microbeca 2025
Isis Vargas es bióloga y egresada de la Maestría en Tecnología y Estética de las Artes Electrónicas. Su práctica se centra en investigar cómo las cosmovisiones son atravesadas por la tecnología, configurando las relaciones entre naturaleza, territorio y vida colectiva.
A través de medios audiovisuales, electromagnéticos y territoriales, Vargas converge procesos analógicos y digitales, hibridando técnicas tradicionales con prácticas tecnológicas y artísticas contemporáneas.
Partiendo de su herencia técnica familiar, aborda el tejido como una interfaz para comprender procesos ambientales, culturales y sociales que exceden la percepción humana, explorando cómo el conocimiento y el significado se organizan, traducen y se hacen legibles a través de sistemas materiales y técnicos.
Isis ha participado en diferentes proyectos, residencias y festivales nacionales e internacionales, donde destacan: Beca Rhizome, 2026 (EUA); Residencia Snowapple, 2025 (México-Países Bajos); Residencia Tecnotejedoras, 2023 (México); Festival Suratómica, 2023 (Colombia) y 14 Bienal de la Habana, 2022 (Cuba).
“Ensayo de un Sismo”, una investigación artística sobre la relación ancestral de la humanidad con los movimientos telúricos. Mi interés se sitúa en esa tensión entre lo invisible, lo anticipado y lo súbito, así como en los modos en que distintas culturas han intentado leer y anticipar estos eventos. […] En continuidad con esta investigación, he sido seleccionada para participar en el programa de residencias Escuela Rural del Prompt, que se llevará a cabo en Chile. La propuesta de investigación se enfoca en el estudio de saberes tradicionales que algunas comunidades rurales utilizan para anticipar un sismo, a partir de la observación del cielo, el comportamiento animal o variaciones del entorno. De manera paralela, desarrollaré una serie de piezas artísticas con producción electrotextil y audiovisual, que dialogan con estos sistemas de lectura del territorio.”
Isis Vargas is a biologist and a graduate of the Master’s program in Technology and Aesthetics of Electronic Arts. Her practice focuses on investigating how traditional knowledge is permeated by technology, shaping the relationships between nature, territory, and collective life.
Through audiovisual, electromagnetic, and territorial media, Vargas converges analog and digital processes, hybridizing traditional techniques with contemporary technological and artistic practices.
Drawing upon her family’s technical heritage, she approaches weaving as an interface for understanding environmental, cultural, and social processes that transcend human perception, exploring how knowledge and meaning are organized, translated, and rendered legible through material and technical systems.
Isis has participated in various national and international projects, residencies, and festivals, most notably: the Rhizome Grant, 2026 (USA); the Snowapple Residency, 2025 (Mexico–Netherlands); the Tecnotejedoras Residency, 2023 (Mexico); the Suratómica Festival, 2023 (Colombia); and the 14th Havana Biennial, 2022 (Cuba).
“Ensayo de un Sismo” (Rehearsal for an Earthquake) is an artistic investigation into humanity’s ancestral relationship with seismic activity. My interest lies in the tension between the invisible, the anticipated, and the sudden—as well as in the various ways different cultures have attempted to interpret and foresee these events. […] In continuity with this research, I have been selected to participate in the Escuela Rural del Prompt residency program, which will take place in Chile. My research proposal focuses on the study of traditional knowledge systems that certain rural communities employ to anticipate earthquakes—specifically through the observation of the sky, animal behavior, or environmental shifts. Concurrently, I will develop a series of artworks utilizing electro-textile and audiovisual media, which engage in a dialogue with these systems for interpreting the landscape.”
