Apapacho was also visited in March by multidisciplinary artist, educator, and arts administrator Ashley Mireles, whose work explores themes of observation, identity, and cultural memory through drawing and printmaking. Her practice often layers historical and contemporary imagery to examine the ways in which people interact with art and public space. Her work can be found in the collections of Artpace San Antonio, Hardberger Park Tobin Land Bridge, Mexic-Arte Museum, National Museum of Mexican Art, Texas Christian University Print Collection, University of Texas Libraries Special Collections, Walt Disney Company, Zuckerman Museum of Art, and the San Antonio River Walk. In addition to her studio practice, Ashley has over 20 years of experience in cultural programming and arts leadership.
Ashley shares “I like the format that PROArtes have provided from application, to communication, orientation/questions, what to expect, etc. I think that’s all the best. For my visit, I would say I made a crazy itinerary that I was able to stick to almost 100% and see everything I wanted to. It took a lot of planning on my part to understand time needed to walk in order to make it everywhere, but I LOVED my experience.”
Ashley focused “on observing how public spaces are activated by people, how artists, organizations, and communities form the experience of a site through temporary use and shared presence.
I spent much of my time visiting temporary installations, public artworks, and cultural spaces throughout the city, studying how scale, material, and participation might influence the relationship between artwork and audience.
As an artist and administrator who works at the intersection of public art, cultural programming, and community engagement, Apapacho offered valuable time for reflection and research that will continue to inform my curatorial practice and future collaborations.”
Ashley also expressed her appreciation for keeping this residency open to arts workers, not only visual artists.
En marzo, Apapacho también recibió la visita de la artista multidisciplinaria, educadora y gestora cultural Ashley Mireles, cuya obra explora temas como la observación, la identidad y la memoria cultural a través del dibujo y el grabado. Su práctica suele superponer imágenes históricas y contemporáneas para examinar cómo las personas interactúan con el arte y el espacio público. Ashley comenta, “Me gusta el formato que PROArtes ha establecido: desde la solicitud hasta la comunicación, la orientación y las preguntas, pasando por la información sobre qué esperar, etc. Creo que todo eso es excelente. En cuanto a mi visita, diría que organicé un itinerario bastante intenso que logré cumplir casi al 100%, viendo todo lo que quería. Requirió mucha planificación por mi parte calcular el tiempo necesario para desplazarme a pie y llegar a todos los sitios, pero mi experiencia fue maravillosa”.
Ashley se enfocó “en observar cómo las personas activan los espacios públicos y cómo lxs artistas, las organizaciones y las comunidades configuran la experiencia de un lugar mediante el uso temporal y la presencia compartida. Pasé gran parte de mi tiempo visitando instalaciones temporales, obras de arte público y espacios culturales por toda la ciudad, estudiando cómo la escala, el material y la participación podían influir en la relación entre la obra de arte y el público.
Como artista y gestora que trabaja en la intersección del arte público, la programación cultural y la participación comunitaria, Apapacho me brindó un tiempo valioso para la reflexión y la investigación, lo cual seguirá enriqueciendo mi práctica curatorial y mis futuras colaboraciones.“
Ashley también expresó su agradecimiento por mantener esta residencia abierta a los trabajadores del arte, no solo a los artistas visuales.
