Apapacho Resident: November 2024
Apapacho’s November resident focused her time on research and exploration, creation, and shared experience. Alex Karolyi, a theater director, performer, and visual artist based in Toronto, CA, visited Mexico City’s fabric-rich spaces to see and feel the materials and objects unique to the region. They also gathered essential materials such as fabrics, dyes, and symbolic objects to inspire their artistic practice. Alex used the studio workspace to create patterned fabrics and textile-based artworks – even adding a few new artworks to the patio walls of Apapacho. She also prioritized connecting with other fabric artists and storytellers, learning from their practices and integrating these disciplines into their theater making.
“As a performing artist and the artistic director of a theatre company I founded in 2002, it is important that I also continue to grow as an artist. I seek residencies where I can explore and expand my practice in new experimental ways.”
Alex Karolyi is the founder of Shadowpath, a theatre company in York Region, Ontario, Canada. In the past five years, Karolyi has focused on heritage spaces, reinterpreting historical works for contemporary audiences. This work has garnered recognition from the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and the Canadian Business Awards, which named Shadowpath the most innovative theatre company in Southern Ontario.
After 20 years in the performative arts, Alex is now expanding her vision to incorporate visual and public art movements into their theatre practice. Transforming everyday spaces into creative places has become her guiding principle, as she evolves from performer to playwright, concept artist, director, and fabric artist. Karolyi’s global experiences have profoundly shaped her artistic portfolio, and she is excited to continue growing as a creative force within her community and beyond.
La artista residente de Apapacho durante el mes de noviembre centró su tiempo en la investigación, la exploración, la creación y la experiencia compartida. Alex Karolyi —directora de teatro, artista escénica y artista visual radicada en Toronto, Canadá— visitó diversos espacios de la Ciudad de México ricos en textiles para ver y sentir los materiales y objetos únicos de la región. Asimismo, recopiló materiales esenciales —tales como telas, tintes y objetos simbólicos— para nutrir su práctica artística. Alex utilizó nuestro estudio para crear telas estampadas y obras de arte de carácter textil, llegando incluso a incorporar algunas piezas nuevas en las paredes del patio de Apapacho. También priorizó el establecer vínculos con otros artistas textiles y narradores, aprendiendo de sus prácticas e integrando estas disciplinas en su labor teatral.
